Does the 6682 have any redeeming qualities?

I've been out of touch with my Series 60 side for a while now - hello my brethren!

I was looking at an upgrade to my 6620, and while I don't need 850mhz, I consider it nice to have. That cut my list down to the 6682, except that it apparently has a history of buggy software, lacking in RAM and is just generally underwhelming, judging from my readings around here. It's also apprarently really hard to unlock (???)

I also noticed that most of the newer S60 handsets, while really cool, are expensive - most notably, the N-Series. Granted, I did pay $270 for my 6620 about 2 years ago, but now being a college student makes it hard to justify another $300-ish phone.

Do you guys have any suggestions for other phones I should check out, for cheap-ish (less than $200) upgrades to the 6620 or is the 6682 my best bet? I'm willing to check out non-850mhz phones too...

I'm not a newbie, just a veteran in need of a refresher's course

Thanks!

get E50
this is a nice S60 for less, and it's slim, and you can use your current accessories, except the DC plug adaptor

I'd say either the E50 or 6682. 6682 would allow you to use all the same apps and accessories (even dc adapter) as your 6620. Until I got my N73, I was a huge fan of my 6682. I had the Cingular branded unit, and surprisingly, it was pretty stable. The bad reports you read were from when the phone first launched. It was far from ready with the first firmware. The newer firmware though, it's pretty stable. The camera is one of the best 1mp cams i've seen on a phone. The E50 would give you a smaller package, as well as a MUCH better screen and some new tweaks in the OS.

6682 is a great phone id recommend it!
Although, the n75 will be out soon.

Dont get the 6682. The only experience I have with that phone is through every single one of my friends who have used it, and had nothing but problems with it. Here's a lesson Nokia: You turned off more people away from S60 and from Nokia as a whole with the 6682 than you can ever imagine. It is also the reason why I chose a 6630 when it came time to upgrade my 6600 (not that long ago), because there was no way I would ever get a 6682.

Look at the 6630 if you're on a budget (I agree the N series is expensive). On the other hand, the E50 is the phone I am recommending to everyone who is not willing to spend 350-600$ on the phone. Looks very nice, very small, new OS and a great screen (I havent seen it personally, but if it's even half as good as my N73, it's worth getting it just for that).

The other option is E62 and the N75 that is coming to Cingular any day now, this assuming you are on cingular, these two may be the cheapest options for you.

I guess that it's a good thing that my deal on a 6682 fell apart...a nice second chance, I guess.

I'm not with Cingy right now, so I'll be buying a phone outright.

The N70 and e62 look like pretty nice phones, particularly the e62 - it looks like a series 60 blackberry. How do you guys like its information management capabilities?

And thanks for all the info so far, it's really helpful in navigating through all the S60 phones that have come out over the past year or so

For those of you who keep defending the 6682 by saying that if you update the firmware, you won't have any memory problems....

can you honestly tell me that you can open opera mini, agilemessenger, AND notepad, musicplayer without it automatically closing (or never opening) ALL programs or the program you just tried to open?

you've gotta be kidding me, this phone is pathetic, I'm selling it to a first time s60 user, I'm using my 6620 right now, and going to probably buy an n70 or if something I like better for a decent price comes out.

Hey!!

I am a fan of the 6682. Yes it was buggy. Yes it has the low memory problem. Yes it is not as good as the N70 in many respects.

But it has 850mhz. It has an AMAZING camera, far superior to the 6620. In fact, no other 1 megapixel camera -- outside the N family -- comes close! btw, Nokia in general has the best features, even though the memory allocation is poor. I have tried out several other Cingy-branded phones. The sound, bi-directionally is outstanding, and the rf superb.

I cannot find a better phone currently offered by Cin. Too bad it had so many problems that it was pulled off the shelf twice. IMHO, it is worth the upgrade. I am waiting for a US version of the N73, or --even better -- the N95, if either are ever released. Either would be a more incredible (but ridiculously expensive) upgrade on my wish list.

ok I was slightly annoyed with the 6682 when I made that last post, because I thought it would be a considerable upgrade to the 6620, the low memory is the main issue that did frustrate me

I have to admit, the camera is very nice, and the RF is better than the 6620. I cannot get a signal with my 6620 in this building (production company, lots of equipment), with the 6682 I at least got 1 bar.

E50 has champion RF, which is slightly better than Z710i (both were approved myself)
also, it has quad-band, which is A MUST for Cingular
the phone is surprising slim (about half thickness than MDA!)
and no more "pop" noise with AD-15 and AD-46
