Does straightening a river have impact on the environment?

A country park straightened a river to get water out of the area quickly to reduce the chances of flooding, what impact could this have on the wildlife?

I'm particually interested in the fish (the only one i know of in this particular park is mallet) in the water and birds (green woodpecker, crow, owls, pigeons etc)
