Does stopping sex after starting in a relationship ruin it?

My girlfriend of six months has just broke up with me, with one of the reasons being that she no longer wants sex and thinks that we will not be able to stop having sex and even if we are able to that it will ruin our relationship. My question is, once you start having sex is it possible to stop, and to not ruin the relationship as well?
 
If you both have no interest in sex, then it'll work fine. If one of you wants sex and the other does not, things aren't likely to stay very content for long.
