Does Smart2go scam people?

bought a 3 years smart2go license for about 2 months ago from smart2go and used it with my nokia e65, and now 2 months later when i bought a new N95 and use the same smart2go app ill get a license error transfer message and cannot use my smart2go license with nokia n95.. ill contacted smart2go and got this reply..

Dear Taimas,

thank you for your request and your interest in our product.

We are sorry, but we do not allow transfers of licenses due to phone changes
as we cannot guarantee backwards compatibility.

That means that we cannot guarantee that older navigation licenses are
compatible with newer software versions. Since on a new device there might be
a new client, this case may emerge and the old license might not be valid any
longer.

To avoid cases like yours, we offer the navigation function also for one year,
so if you change your device every year, you do not pay for a time in which
you will not be able to use the navigation.

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards

wow if thats the case i refuse to pay smart2go/nokia for navigation as i was thinking about buying it. tomtom will surely get my money.

You should call them and throw a fit. Also, tomtom won't be getting anything from me until they come out with an n95 version. I wonder what the holdup is.

What happens when you do a firmware upgrade on your E65 and need to reinstall smart2go? Will it refuse transfer as well? lol

Posted for publicity. I also took the liberty of forwarding the email along to a contact that I have.

Yeah thats messed up. I was going to buy the license for 3 years, but i don't know if i'll even have the n95 for 3 years. They really need to fix that so we can transfer the license keys.

I received no response for my request to transfer between two N95 phones. So its not about backwards compatibility. They just do not allow you to transfer between IMEI numbers. Its flat out BS.

It sucks, but I would guess that the reason is that it's not *currently* possible to disable a license on the first phone, to enable it on the second.

It is definitely something that needs to be looked into, though.

Well I had to take my N95 back and get a new one today . i had broiught the license on the old N95 that was faulty. I just put in the serial number supplied to me from smart2go and it worked. It is not locked to your IEMI number as they supply a software key.

If the software key does not work on a different phone then that is just silly as they say its compatible with all series 60 phones and including windows mobile.

I would contact Visa if you payed that way and tell them that the purchace is not fit for purpose. In the UK this is law and Visa will act as needed to ensure you get your money back.

Hope it all works out for you , you definatley have a case in small claims court.

I just received an email from my contact, and I'm sure Phat^Trance will as well. Hopefully he'll get his issue solved, but moreso, I hope that this will cause some change in thinking.

That's exactly what I just commented about in your blog. Weird.

It makes sense that Nokia would enforce SOME form of fraud protection to keep licenses from being used by anyone, but this obviously isn't going to work. As it's been said, most users switch phones every month to three months, which just doesn't add up if you buy a yearly license on each one and it SUCKS if you miss out on the bulk deal if you have to buy on a monthly basis.

Why don't we all just use [warez] to change our IMEI's?

My full story on Maps2go or should I say Mapscost2go is on top of my Blog. http://wardy.vox.com/

I hope you get it all sorted . So far I have only had a computer generated reply. Nice

Looks like I will need to leave it with the Visa Legal team in the UK to fight my corner.

How would Nokia keep track of that? It would have to be a block on any OTHER SIM card trying to use a phone with a Smart2Go license. Developers do this by locking codes to email addresses and IMEI's, but if it were just locked to a single phone number and that phone number had to be keyed in as part of using the license, there would be nothing to stop that user from posting his phone number and license code on the internet for everyone to use.

That being said, I think that can be done, similar to those applications that prevent mobile theft by locking the device if a different SIM card is inserted other than the owners.
