does rideing a road bike on the side walk damage the bike because of the bumps?

The bumps from the joints in the sidewalk concrete are harmless. Riding off a curb and dropping to street level will bend the fork, but that will take quite a while. (I did a heck of a job on my 3 speed Raleigh's fork as a curb jumper when I was a kid.) Best to take advantage of the curb ramps whenever you can.

It's even better to not ride on the sidewalk at all. Bikes don't belong there. You can cause accidents because of the great speed difference between you and pedestrians. In most locations, it is illegal to ride bikes on the sidewalks.

If your friends insist on riding on the sidewalks, you can ride on the streets next to them. The street is where bicycles belong.
