Does my AC work? Honda Civic 99?

I do have a Honda Civic EX 99, with 67.000 miles, that I bought just a month ago. I am not sure if the AC in my car is working or not. Every time I use it the temperature into the car goes down, but not really that much, it does not really cool so much. If I turn it off, but I let the fan still on the temperature goes up, which I think means the AC is really working, however I as said before it does cool much, plus it takes so much time to reduce the temperature inside the car. Is there anything simple I could check in order to know if the AC is working?, plus anything else I could do or check to try to find that everything related with the AC is working? I am afraid of mechanics because they can charge you so much for sometime its simple to fix, or not really expensive, so I would like to know what's going on before to take it to any mechanic.

Sounds like you have two issues, one a coolant issue if the temp goes up and secondly an ac issue. I would take it to a reputable repair facility and have it checked out by a professional, it's kind of like thinking you might have cancer but you dont want to go to a doctor because it might cost something to get checked out.
