Does life seem like a riddle sometimes?

When into Time's deep vault my thoughts descend
To plumb the secrets of the cosmic dance
It's to the thought of missing you I tend
Instead, and you still hold me in your trance.
And then the secrets of the world dissolve
Into the mists of insignificance
And from the fog of my thoughts you appear
And yet I cannot solve
The paradox of how to bring you hence
And once I have you how to hold you near.

I understand great mysteries it's said
I look through all things to their very heart
If I knew your heart half as well instead
We would not spend eternity apart.
Before the altar of pure thought I kneel
To ken the secrets of the Universe
To know its heartbeat and its laws as well;
Could I know if you feel
Alone as I tonight, I would rehearse
The frightening words to lift us from this Hell.

Instead I calculate rotation curves
Of galaxies, and for dark matter search
Because, I guess, I haven't got the nerves
To climb down for a moment from my perch
And try to grasp the mystery of your hands.
And so this Time I study passes by
As I sit dreaming of your soft sweet face.
The Universe expands;
It cares too little for a lover's sigh
Or mortal yearning for one warm embrace.
Ian, the stanzas mimic those of Keats's "Ode to a Nightingale" in rhyme scheme and meter... yes, the three-beat eighth line of each stanza is intentional.
