Does it matter which output I use?

I bought a stereo really cheap. Its a good brand stereo. It has 3 outputs, front/rear,and subs. but I got it cheap because the Subwoofer output doesnt work. so I connected the subs to the rear output. My friends told me that its not the same because the front/rear outputs have higher frequencies than the sub outputs. so that it wont make the amps produce some low frequencies,

is it true??

No, it's not true. Front and rear outputs have the full frequency range, from the deepest bass to the highest treble. Subwoofer outputs often filter out everything except the bass. If you use the rear output, the bass will still be there. You'll just have to use the crossover setting on the amplifier to filter out the higher frequencies. Also, the subwoofer volume control on your head unit won't work.
