Does it matter what sizes your art is for a portfolio?

I'm currently working on a portfolio for college, most of my work is done in my sketchbook which is 11 X 8 1/2 inches. Does it matter that most of them are that small or would they want bigger pieces?
Would it hurt me if they wanted bigger pieces and i gave them the smaller ones?
