end of the experiment? we had this experiment wherein we looked for the molecular weight of an unknown gas using ideal gas law. we assembled an apparatus with a test tube containing a gas generating material. a rubber tube was attached and is connected to a longer tube containing water. upon heating the tube with the material, the water from the longer tube goes down (as gas and pressure builds up). Here we marked the the changes using a marker (from the starting level of the water before heating until the water goes down 1/4 of the tube) using the marks from the tube, we manage to get the volume of the gas which then was applied in the ideal gas law.
the question is is there any effect in getting the molecular weight of the unknown gas if the gas generating material is impure? if it is wet? and if it only partially reacted at the end of the experiment?
