if u move it to an external HD, then it would remain safe. Also, u'll get space on hard drive for other things, external HD's are portable also, so u can carry ur movies n stuff wherever u want...
I was wondering the same thing myself for a long time. I had an incident where I lost some of my very important photos.
It was at that point that I decided to invest in an external hard drive myself. I highly recommend doing it. Your content will stay safe and, if you choose to, you can keep a large portion of your on-board drive empty.
I have three computers backed up on one drive.
