Does Guitar Hero World Tour PS2 require more than a regular hand controller to play?

I bought Guitar Hero World Tour for my kid, but no guitar because I knew the older vrsion played on a regular controller. But he can't play it. It keeps saying something about needing a microphone to add more vocalists. We are not trying to sing or play drums. We just want to play a couple guitar.
