Does growing up in certain environments prepare people for the day to day

I grew up in both settings. What shocked me most about moving to the suburbs where the amount of drugs available in the suburbs. I always thought most drugs were in the hood. This is the picture I think most have. I found out that the guys on the corner have nothing on the guys holding weight in the suburbs. The hood just have the violence of people fighting over table crumbs. The REAL criminals live in the suburbs and play in the hood. Also I notice there are some real wh8res who live in the suburbs. A lot more than people think.

@PistolPete--Yeah I know about Park Heights, you know about Cherry Hill and the Village? Yeah I had weekends in the hood too. Grew up in Woodlawn.

I guess it depends where your lot in the world is.

If you were raised in the hood and you wind up staying in the hood once you are an adult, that kind of upbringing is most beneficial.

If you are raised in the 'burbs and end up in the 'burbs same thing.

I guess the incompatibility comes when you were raised in one and end up in the other. Growing up in the suburbs will not prepare someone for life in the hood and someone who grew up in the hood will probably not be content in the suburbs.

living in the world moreso than not? Or does every environment have its own limitations on preparing its inhabitants for what they will encounter when they move out of Mom and Dad's house?

Is there any atvantage to living in the "hood" when it comes to living in the world? Atvantages growing up in suburbia?

For those that have lived in either setting, did you ever experience a culture shock when you branched out on your own that kind of made you question anything regarding how you were raised, or the environment you were raised in?

yes i think so. i grew up in suburbia and during the summers spent alot of time in the hood. now if i hadnt spent those summers in the hood (Park Heights,Baltimore) there are a lot of things i would never know, like how to read people and know how to spot someone with bad intentions. it also prepared me on how to go without certain things i was used to.

I grew up on a farm outside a town of 3, 500. It lacked diversity but the people were very grounded. I moved to Atlanta when I was 18 but my parents had done a good enough job of taking us places so that I didn't sit there and gape....

Of course it does. I had the opportunity to live in suburbia and "the hood". I can tell you about both.

Suburban schools adamently prep you for higher education(colleges & universities). The people are more financially stable their and that makes for a more comfortable lifestyle and a higher expectation on going to college, getting a professional job, and maintaining that same lifestyle that their parents have.

Urban schools are like babysitting. People go there because they have to and its more of a social get together. The teachers are usually less qualified with low expectations and it comes off on their attitudes towards the students..I have had a teacher smack me in the face and call me a whore, I have had a teacher always late for class, a teacher call the students worthless and incompetent... I never experienced that in a suburban school...When you live in the ghetto no one expects you to become successful some people don't even expect you to survive with all the turmoil going on (gangs, druggies, and uneducated people living together intermingles with lower income people working pay check to pay check to survive) Desperation caused people to break the rules and act out...Of course there are people that grow up there wanting more for themselves with out people driving them or guiding them...

I did experience a culture shock when I moved from the urban area north of boston to the 99% white suburban town of Hampton, NH. People treated me differently when I was there. My guardians treated me as equal but while at school I was the "black girl"...Yes things felt lonely and awkward. I was suprised how the HS had so many programs that my old HS in "the hood" did not have....Either way it is down to you if you want to be successful in life or not..Some people have more help than others but if you really want it you just have to work twice as hard which will only make you more appreciative at the end of the day... I worked my butt off for what I have and I am proud of myself for that.
