Of course it does. I had the opportunity to live in suburbia and "the hood". I can tell you about both.
Suburban schools adamently prep you for higher education(colleges & universities). The people are more financially stable their and that makes for a more comfortable lifestyle and a higher expectation on going to college, getting a professional job, and maintaining that same lifestyle that their parents have.
Urban schools are like babysitting. People go there because they have to and its more of a social get together. The teachers are usually less qualified with low expectations and it comes off on their attitudes towards the students..I have had a teacher smack me in the face and call me a whore, I have had a teacher always late for class, a teacher call the students worthless and incompetent... I never experienced that in a suburban school...When you live in the ghetto no one expects you to become successful some people don't even expect you to survive with all the turmoil going on (gangs, druggies, and uneducated people living together intermingles with lower income people working pay check to pay check to survive) Desperation caused people to break the rules and act out...Of course there are people that grow up there wanting more for themselves with out people driving them or guiding them...
I did experience a culture shock when I moved from the urban area north of boston to the 99% white suburban town of Hampton, NH. People treated me differently when I was there. My guardians treated me as equal but while at school I was the "black girl"...Yes things felt lonely and awkward. I was suprised how the HS had so many programs that my old HS in "the hood" did not have....Either way it is down to you if you want to be successful in life or not..Some people have more help than others but if you really want it you just have to work twice as hard which will only make you more appreciative at the end of the day... I worked my butt off for what I have and I am proud of myself for that.
