Does facebook really 'own' your photos when you upload them?

I heard from someone that when you upload anything - including photos to facebook, that they then have a joint aggrement in the ownership of your photos. They can then use them for advertising and such...
Also, the quality that they have of your images is full resolution because apparently the full resoloution shot is uploaded and THEN compressed, and not the other way around

This is all in their terms of aggrement which everyone ticks when signing up without reading.

But is this all actually true? and if it is, how likely is it that facebook do this? or can they just have the power to do this?
Thanks :)
