Does doing the Frog Split help progress the Side Splits?

I've been trying to do the Side Splits, but there has been no progress. Then my brother suggested that I do the frog splits (the side splits with the knees bent), and do you think the frog splits will help? What about butterfly stretches? Also, do you think it is safe to fall asleep while doing the Side splits or Frog splits?
