Does burning wood pollute the environment?

I'm trying to decide wether to get a fireplace wood insert or switch to gas. just how much pollution does wood cause, if any?
 
well in a way it does, because the burning wood adn smoke, has an effect on global warming, i think gas is better but im not sure if its as safe
look into it first
