does being in a sport affect your chances to enter college?

I am a junior in high school. I did track for three years and cross country for two years. I plan to do them for senior year as well I always stay out pretty late for practice and end up tired when i get home. When i get exhausted i sometimes neglect to do my homework or do them poorly. I currently have a 3.6. I have the most difficult classes possible for juniors in my school and plan to do so for senior year. Im also in various clubs such as national honor society, red cross, and other community service clubs. I took the SAT recently and received a 1900.

With all the hype of getting into college with the admission cuts i am worried i might not get into the college i want to such as UCI an UCLA. I am wondering if someone doing sports an having a 3.6 gpa can compete with others who have 4.0+ gpa's who don't do sports.
would colleges consider sports being a factor on a student's grades? im sure i would of done so much better in school if i did not commit 2+ hours a day on sports and be so tired in class...

well to be honest sports do not necessarily affect your chances of entering the college of your choice. i will say however that it is very impressive that you are in the various clubs at your high school, play sports, and are able to maintain a 3.6 gpa. so i suppose in that sense you could say a college might look at that and say well he has good time management skills or he is able to cope with high stress situations. so being active in extracurricular activities and maintaining a high gpa does look good when applying to a specific college. but to answer your question sports will not necessarily affect your chances of getting into school whatsoever. participate in many clubs and activities in your school. also this looks really good on you applications to a university....extracurricular activities outside of school. that looks really great to the application office!
hope that helps
