Does Apple let you know when they can't fix your iPod?

I sent my iPod into Apple, fairly certain the damage wouldn't be covered by the warranty. However, they sent me an email saying "Your service request has been completed and your IPOD NANO (4TH GENERATION) shipped on 2010-05-06". This seems to imply to me that the repairs have been made. However, I am wondering if Apple just doesn't notify you by email if they cannot make the repairs and just sends out a generic form. Has anyone had Apple not fix their iPod and do you know if they would inform you in the email specifically if the repairs had not taken place?
