Does anyone use a diaper genie or anything similar?

My husband wants to get a diaper genie but I was thinking wouldnt a nice trash can with a lid work just as well? Like one of those that has a foot pedal? I thought that the trash can would be bigger so you could fill it more but I don't know if theres some special mechanism that makes the diaper genie guard against smells. Does anyone use a diaper genie or anything similar? Is it even worth buying?
 
While not completely perfect, a diaper genie can help a lot. Imagine the odor that will come wafting out every time you open the garbage can lid. With a diaper genie, you push the diaper past a hinged portion that helps to keep the bag pinched closed which helps to control the smell. We have one upstairs and downstairs.
