Does anyone think the officer selection in the US military is broken?

We have guys fresh out of college commanding into battle. I mean i understand they receive the training to do so, but i believe training means as much as a speck of dirt compared to actual experience. so how does all this work? how do these officers get respect when most of the men they command have seen and done so much more?

they have to earn the respect like all others. yes, it's quite a task, but it's one of the first things a new LT has to learn.

officers fresh out of college dont lead in battle. actually no officer truely leads in battle these days anyway. their NCOs lead, they follow them around.

an officer who is respected uses his rank to benefit his men...the rest of them really arent respected even if they are shown the required respect.

Well a second lieutenant isn't exactly gonna really be leading fresh out of college. Until they've really had some experience the NCO's do all the leading. That's usually how it is anyway unless you go into the realm of special operations, those officers are all tough, smart leaders who actually lead in battle. For instance all team leaders in the green berets are captains and fight just like the rest.
