Does anyone read Shonen Jump and...

do you think it's worth reading anymore?

I just recently subscribed to Shonen Jump for the speed up of One Piece, but I notice that some people usually use the internet to find this stuff. I guess it was cool back in 04 but now I wonder if it's worth it.

I still want it since the series in it have started growing on me. Still can't love Bleach enough to look at those later chapters (I just get really confused.)

As long as Ultimo, Tegami Bachi, and One Piece stay there it's still worth it for me... I guess.

The fact remains that if you want to legally follow the original manga that started some of the biggest anime franchises, you have to read Shonen Jump. That said, it started as a truly uncut manga publication for teens, and has since sold out more and more and shifted into a more kid-friendly magazine with lots of edits.

I gave my thoughts on it now as compared to how it started. Whether you think that means it's worth reading or not is up to you. I still read it, but not as religiously as I used to, and I can see why people would stop.

It's up to you really.

I personally don't, mostly because I'm not as interested in Naruto and Bleach as I once was, haven't gotten around to catching up with One Piece, and Gintama (my favorite series) isn't running in it. *shrugs*

But if I could read Japanese, I'd totally haul my ass out to Kinokinuya to buy Weekly Shounen Jump. XD

I buy it because its really one of the best (& almost only) montly manga mags out there, Yen+ is overpriced & besides soul eater, Baraboo Blade & The OEL Maximum ride series, doesn't really have enough good series to justify paying almost 9 dollars a month for.

At least Jump gives us Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, YuYuhakusho. Yugioh & of course New Series like Ultimo & Tamagachi bachi, in one magazine, although the newer 2 are only sub-par IMPO. & so what if there's a few minor edits, Im so Tired of people whining over stuff like, they took out a curse word, theres less blood then the japanese version or they shilloeted one of Konahamurus sexy jutsu's,,,Given sometimes the edits are kind of silly, like the removal of Shikamaru's Cigarette. But besides that I don't think they've done anything wrong with the manga's they have, they treat there series pretty good & Shonen Jump is Deffiantly worth $4.99 a month.

I really only read it for OP, Naruto...and...uh...I can't remeraber anymore. I've got all 80+ issues, so I figure I might as well keep it up...

I didn't like it. No surprise since I was into Shojo Beat. I have two laying around that I was sent for my SB subscription, and the stories just aren't my bag. If they had something more mature and less beat 'em up maybe I'd look into it, but since I don't like Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece it's a waste for me.

I stop renewing my subscription to SJ when I realized all I was reading it for was One Piece and YYH. I could just buy the GN of One Piece and YYH if I wanted to read it that badly. Also, I wasn't a fan when they decided to drop Shaman King from their publication of SJ, and decided to release it in GN. Didn't care much for Naruto, since I couldn't keep with their speedy release, and Bleach, they put you mid story in that and it was hard to follow it.

Considering that the magazine stopped giving equal parts treatment to its licenses years ago in favor of stirring hype, I dropped the magazine like a bad habit.

You were talking about a comic magazine that was sold in grocery stores and standard retail stores where people of all ages were able to have access to it. It was a surprise to nobody that the magazine got edited over time. Hell, even I didn't believe that the magazine would stay unedited when I first heard that it would be sold in retail stores. It was just a matter of when. And sure enough, it happened with the tanuki incident. Anyone who thought Viz's Shonen Jump would remain fully uncut were dreaming.

I thought it was because one person also complained about how Kazemaru had a "swastika" on his forehead, when in fact it was a Buddhist syrabol, that caused an uproar. Since they did edit Shaman King appearance of the taunki.

I always have collected all or most of Viz's anthology publications and Shonen Jump is no exception. It got me into Naruto, gave me the means to read an official translation of One Piece (despite the whole Zolo thing) and I was able to see the evolution of Yu-gi-oh (the original series). I agree with many though that there was a serious decline in quality control when the magazine became "mainstream" and a vehicle to promote the SJ label on more kid-friendly terms. Funny thing is Viz has ALWAYS done this as a business and even during their pioneering Ranma 1/2 days fans have always had issues with Viz's adhering to the mainstream to sell a series.

I still will continue to read Shonen Jump because at least the "holy trinity" is going to be as close to the Japanese version come next year and I like that American SJ at least tries to keep most of the color pages for its series and I like some of the articles in the magazine (even if its stuff I already know.). I also think the new series don't WOW me like its pioneering line-up did but a good chunk of those series have ended or are being published in a faster GN schedule (I honestly wish they kept Hikaru no Go because that was always an interesting read). I'm also disappointed by their edits but what really upsets me is the edits in the Naruto GNs. I feel its one thing to have the edits in the magazine but they SHOULD NOT carry over into the GN release because its giving the message we have to accept the edited release on go seek out the original Japanese versions.
That's the only thing that really peeves me.

O-chan

I personally don't think so. Reading it through "other means" allows me to save money on a magazine that features comics I don't like, and keeps me up to date of the latest issue.

I'll be honest, I'm not that familiar with the Tanuki incident, in fact, this is the first time I heard about it. Was it the one in YYH? Since if it was Shaman King, boy do I feel foolish, since I do remeraber that a cover page or two had one, and was unaware of any controversy from that.

My stance on how long SJ can last is this: Could go on as long as WSJ is being published in Japan.
