country, USSR & USA? Does anyone know why the space race was so important in the Cold war that each country, USSR & USA? , had to be the first to do something and how this had an impact on the image of the country. Can some one give me a website related to your answer. This is not my homework.
Thanks

In the cold war period, no one wanted one country to say the owned space or the moon and each was concerned that the major powers would use the space and or the moon to launch strikes on the other and gain advantage.

Now if all the time, monies and knowledge had been put to other uses maybe just maybe we would be better off. On the other hand alot of very useful medicine gadets have come out of the process.

they wanted to be superior in all fronts and this sshows greatness particularly financially

It was partly national prestige and one upmanship, and partly militaristic - the technology of getting into orbit was essentially the same as the technology of intercontinental ballistic missiles, so it was a 'peaceful' way of showing off military capability. Also, there is an ancient but valid military axiom 'take the high ground'!
