Does anyone know what this book is called?

I think i read it a very long time ago and i can't remember a lot of it but if any help would be appreciated.

Well the main character (not sure if its a girl or boy) sneaks into what i think is some kind of spirit world with all these weird creatures and things and she is not allowed to be there. I remember in the beginning some of the creatures/spirits (whichever) lining up to go on these boat things. Those are the only things i remember about it...i know its not a lot but like i said any help would be appreciated
