Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey? The things that fall from space are called threads. The dragons take flight and attack the threads with flame before they can hit the ground and cause damage.
 
I started reading the series years ago, but i never finished them. There are a LOT of them. The books are about dragons, but they're used to repair the sky and one of the books is about some sort of space thing falling to earth. I don't remember much more about them, but the characters have odd names.
