It's a long shot, but I just thought of this weird book I read in elementary or middle school, sometime between 1997 and 2001.
The main character is a high school girl. I'm pretty sure her name is Nicolette and that she's in madrigal choir. This new kid shows up at school and he's really mysterious. Somehow she finds out that he came from a swamp or marsh, and - bear with me - that he is made of swamp. Like, he has a human form, but he turns into vines and leaves when he's back in the swamp, I think.
I can't remember the plot or how they even crossed paths, but by the end, I think she falls in love with him, and there's something about keeping the town safe...so he lies to her about where he's going when he's really going to go save the town. This involves dynamite and him blowing up along with it to the effect of the town being saved.
I would LOVE to find this story to know whether this plot actually got published or I horribly misunderstood something I read as a kid.
