Does anyone know the laws on replaceing a lost game system?

My son borrowed a PSP from a boy and he lost it. We told the boys mom as soon as our son gets a job since he is 16 he will replace it. She is now demanding that she have it by Friday or she will call the cops. She also claims she wants a new one. Does anyone know what the cops can do about this since my son did not steal this. The boy let him borrow it. Also if we replace it does it have to be brand new?
 
Legally, you are responsible for the property loss. Just like if a kid damages property... even if its not malicious... the parents are responsible.

Try to find it. If it is lost, go out and buy a new one and make things right. You can force your son to pay you back once he has a job. But I guarantee you, this is a slam dunk for the mother if she pursues this in small claims court.
