Does anyone know the answer to this riddle?

Someone I'm living with knows the riddle.
We all have to ask questions starting "Can you got the..."

For example,
Can you go the cinema
Can you go to the ice cream shop etc etc

He then answers yes and no.

Does anyone know what the method is, of him saying yes and no?
Thats what we've got to try and work out!
