Does anyone know of any large active graphic design/graphic art communities? Im looking for some sort of forum that I can contribute to, to improve my graphic abilities. Thanks
 
Explore the slantville.com site. A nice mix of pros and amateurs discussing pretty much all angles of the craft.

I haven't participated in a long time, but, at it's inception, I wrote the FAQ page. I know that it has gone through lots of changes over the years.
