Ok, This is not necessarily a problem, there are many magasines that name loads of companies, perhaps the best is TGO (The great outdoors) which comes out monthly, but please don't bother, go to Argos, buy a simple tent, like the "Quickdraw" which self assembles. buy a good foam mat, making sure it is sealed foam! and a good sleeping bag, in March buy a 300-400 gsm and if the weather is warmer consider a 200 gsm, choose hollow fibre, If you want to be really comfortable buy an airbed. as well and head to a camping site and spend the weekend, it will do wonders for your confidience. When you first camp don't cook, if you feel you have to don't buy a lot of technical gear like a multifuel stove etc., borrow a camping gas burner off a local hippie and try reheating pre cooked meals from LIDL and Sainsburies. This is not addressing the question you have actually asked but please believe me this is the way to go. After one weekend on a campsite your confidience will be high enough to let you move ahead at your own pace. Camping shops (and Argos) have catalogues that give loads of advice,
Remember to enjoy yourself and people camping will help you, the payback is that soon you will volunteer to help others.
good luck.
