Does anyone have any ideas for getting a kitten to stop whining at night?

I just got a kitten (born 02/26/08) and have had him for 5 days. The problem is that he whines for around 5 to 10 minutes every night when we put him to bed. Sometimes loud enough to be heard outside! He has his own room with plenty of food and water. Also a litter box and a bed. I live in an apartment and I don't want him bothering other people. Any suggestions?
 
I agree with the others who say to let your kitty sleep with you. There's is nothing sweeter than the closeness of a kitty or cat sleeping with its trusted human keeper. If you're concerned about him wetting your bed, buy some mattress protector sheets, I got mine at Target, I could only find them in twin size so I bought 2 and put my fitted sheet over them. He's your baby now, he's not with his cat mama anymore, you're his new mama and his cries are because he's not used to being alone at night.

I've learned from living with cats that "rules" (our way of doing things) are meant to be broken, and making our kitties happy is a reward in itself.
 
My cat is 4 and still does it occasionally. Normally carries around his fleece mouse at the same time. I just lay in bed and giggle...
 
try a hot water bottle/heating pad and a ticking clock or one of those fetal sound stuffed animals for infants oh but I like BD'S answer better.
 
I've heard that if you put a clock or watch under the blankets in their beds, the sound of the hand ticking reminds them of their mother's heartbeat and comforts them, making them settle down sooner than they normally would. I've never had to try it, but it can't hurt to give it a try! Good luck, sleep well ;)
 
yep.. he's a kitten.. and just wants to be with you.. Why not let him sleep with you. I found that if you are closer to your cat, they will also be more attached to you. From my experience, pet that sleeps with their owner becomes more human-like.. like they seem to understand you better and become more attached in the future. Your cats will be more cuddly too.
 
Your kitten misses his family. He is only 6 weeks old...most breeders should keep puppies and kittens until at least 7-8 weeks. He is not used to being alone, and is still just a baby. Try playing with him A LOT before bedtime and don't let him take a nap during the evening so that he is plenty tired by night. Will he lay down and sleep with you? Consider letting him sleep in your room or lay with him until he falls asleep in his own room then sneak out. Other than that, you are just going to have to let him adjust and grow out of it.
