Does anyone else look terrible in photos of themselves taken with a the flash on

where when its dark out? gawd i dont know how all those celebs manage to still look ok in paparazzi pics, well i guess a different type of camera is used. Still, I think a pic taken in natural light is much more flattering. Maybe its just the angles of my face.
 
when ever flash fires directly at someone, and from pretty close to the camera, the same thing happens.

Most paparazzi have diffusers on their flashes to soften the light. Also, a lot of them move the flash away from the camera, by using a flash bracket and an extension cord.
