Does anyone else agree?

I honestly believe that the best films were made in the 90's! Cause nowadays, there are no original ideas anymore. They are just stealing stuff and adding technology to it to make it look great. The best films I believe are:-

Mrs. Doubtfire

Curly Sue

Jumanji

Speed

Death Becomes Her

Drop Dead Fred

Good Burger

Rush Hour

You're kidding, right? I was with you up until your examples. Out of that list, Speed is the only one I could watch more than a few times. Mrs Doubtfire and Death Becomes Her were reasonable...but all the others are pretty lousy :p

If you wanted to back up your argument, I would have chosen...

Fight Club
The Truman Show
Toy Story & 2
Terminator 2 : Judgment Day
Pulp Fiction
Groundhog Day
The Matrix
Scream
The Sixth Sense
Forrest Gump
Resevoir Dogs
Leon
The Shawshank Redemption

Yeah, I wondered whether to stick that in there as I realise it's an acquired taste. Peer pressure from the person in the room with me!

Uh-oh! Rose-tinted fever hits the '90s :D j/k

Seriously though - if you take a whole decade and handpick a handful of films then you are likely to have something resembling an argument for those 10 years having nurtured 'the best films of all time'.

For example....

I honestly believe that the best films were made in the 80's! Cause nowadays, there are no original ideas anymore. They are just stealing stuff and adding technology to it to make it look great. The best films I believe are:-

The Empire Strikes Back
Beverly Hills Cop
The Blues Brothers
Gremlins
Ghostbusters
The Goonies
E.T.
Aliens
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Poltergeist
...etc...etc...

I do agree to some extent that you have a point though. The sophistication of film has grown a lot since, say, the 1950s and the 1990s represent a large step in the style and techniques used in film.

Similarly, we live in a world of postmodernism; nothing is new or original anymore - that's kinda the point :D

Don't be too down on the '00s! Don't forget that they've produced acclaimed movies such as Shrek (2001), Amores Perros (2001), Memento (2000), Donnie Darko (2001), American Splendor (2003), Lost In Translation (2003) and Rush Hour 2 (2001) ;) .

If you're looking for great movies of '00s that doesn't rely on special effects and are quite original then try:

City of God (2002)
Memento (2000) - already mentioned by damndirtyape (above) but it is a fine movie
Big Fish (2004)
Amelie (2001)

it hasn't been all bad in recent years i don't think - here's a list of pretty decent films of the last 5 years or so :

donnie darko
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
garden state
sideways
traffic
wonder boys
high fidelity
man on the moon
almost famous
o brother where art thou
the man who wasn't there
finding forrester
vanilla sky
mulholland drive
monsters inc
finding nemo
monsters ball
a beautiful mind
the motorcycle diaries
rabbit proof fence
adaptation
lost in translation
punch drunk love
the quiet american
hotel rwanda
dogville
the station agent
sin city
closer

Yeah there have been some good films so far in the 00's but remember that we are only half way through this decade and there are hopefully a lot more good films to come!

Tutt Tutt - we should read more closely ;) :D

Didn't exactly say that I liked any of them, merely that such films have been held in high regard and were worthy as examples of fine film making (apart from Rush Hour 2, that was added in special just for Pleb :D ); as it stanRAB I do like most of the films I listed, although I wasn't overly fond of 'Shrek' or 'American Splendor' (both OK, but slightly overrated IMHO).

It's just that any mention of that damnable movie gets me going - I don't know what it is about it, I just can't stand it. I had to walk out of the cinema.

:D :D LOL - I know you weren't the only one - a relative of a good friend of mine demanded (and received) his money back after going to see it!

i was dragged to see American Splendour by an ex who lived his movie-going life according to Empire..I wanted those 2 hours back so badly
Although it wasnt as bas as Thirteen! why was that film so acclaimed! a swift smack in the gob was all that little sh*t needed

I'm an 80's movie fan myself, except a few exceptions. Films had tighter scripts then and didn't rely on big name actors and CGI effects. Blockbusters now aren't what they used to be - the lesser known newer "cult" movies are generally better quality.

I wouldn't exactly say 'cult' movies are where it's at, so much as low budget productions: they tend to be far more creative and inventive thanks to the flexibility of the process. In fact, many of my favourite movies of all time have been low-budget numbers.
