Does anybody think bike helmets are as stupid as I do?

They are retarded. The bike has been around since 1885. Helmets have been around for 20 years and been a craze for 10.

My kids ride their bikes on a residential street and no way are going faster than 5 miles/hour. I dont know what the statistics are on head injuries for children on bikes, but I doubt that it is a real huge problem.

Does anybody but me realize that this SH IT is just commercialize to make you buy stuff?

Oh and Please Please dont tell me "If it could only save 1 life....". The country was founded on Give me Liberty or Give me death.

Also ladies if you see my kids on the street with helmets when walking your 2.5 kids and dog, please save your snide looks for someone else who gives a shit.

If a kid is wearing a helmet it can make the difference between life and death so its worth it in my opinion. I know kids don't go too fast but there's always the chance they could be hit by a car.

Bad daddy. Shame on you.

I work in a Brain Injury Center, and honestly, a brain injury isn't worth the "stupidity" of wearing a "retarted" helmet.

* There are 73 to 85 million bicycle riders in the US, including 44.7 million over age of 6 who rode more than six times in 2008.

* 698 bicyclists reportedly died on US roads in 2007.

* In a typical year over 90 percent of cyclists killed on US roads die in crashes with motor vehicles.

* The "typical" bicyclist killed on our roads is a sober male over 16 not wearing a helmet riding on a major road between intersections in an urban area on a summer evening when hit by a car.

* About 540,000 bicyclists visit emergency rooms with injuries every year. Of those, about 67,000 have head injuries, and 27,000 have injuries serious enough to be hospitalized.

* Non-helmeted riders are 14 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than helmeted riders.

* Head injuries account for more than 60 percent of bicycle-related deaths, more than two-thirds of bicycle-related hospital admissions and about one-third of hospital emergency room visits for bicycling injuries.

* A very high percentage of cyclists' brain injuries can be prevented by a helmet, estimated at anywhere from 45 to 88 per cent.

* Direct costs of cyclists' injuries due to not using helmets are estimated at $81 million each year, rising with health care costs.

* Indirect costs of cyclists' injuries due to not using helmets are estimated at $2.3 billion each year.

* Helmet use in the US varies greatly in different areas and different sectors of our society. White collar commuters probably reach 80 per cent, while inner city kids and rural kids would be 10 per cent or less. Overall, our best wild guess is probably no more than 25 per cent.

* Usage rates: Sommers Point, NJ, where a state helmet law is in effect, found that only 24 of the 359 students who rode to school in one week of the Winter of 2002 wore helmets (6 per cent) until the School District adopted a helmet rule. North Carolina observed 17 per cent statewide before their law went into effect in 2001, with big variations by area and type of rider. Others:
o Portland: 76% (transportation cyclists)
o Alaska: 17% to 35%
o Washington State 33% in east to 56% in western areas.
o Duval County FL: Toddlers 100%, most others 25%
o Ft Lauderdale, FL: 25%
o Hollywood, FL: 15%
o Hawai'i 2002: 20%

* Helmets are cheap. The typical discount store price has risen from under $10 to about $20, but there are still models available for about $10 at major national retailers including Target and Wal-Mart.

In the Netherlands no one wears a bike helmet.

even though we have the largest bike/population ratio in the world.

so its just Bullsh*t

I think they're important if you're jumping off ramps and stuff like that but if you're just ridding your bike, I don't think so
