Does anybody not like DVD?

I find it quite mad how quickly the DVD took over VHS. I'm pleased it has though. All the points mentioned above are true. Personally, it's the lifespan that impresses me. Most VHS tapes began to stretch and wear out after several plays which meant they would eventually break and need replacing. Whereas DVD goes on and on - Just make sure you put them back in the case and dont let them get scratched.
I'm worried about HDTV coming about soon, which will lead to the improved DVD format.
I can't think of any advantages to VHS at all.
 
They do fit into the toaster easier than VHS, mind.

I am always amazed by the difference in quality between DVD and VHS. If I go back to an old video (less often now, as I've replaced most) the picture and sound quality is so much poorer.
 
i can only find one bad point about DVD , they can get scratched quite easily if you are not careful . Dont let young kiRAB near them at all costs , put them back in the case after watching and on the shelf where they are safe .
 
The thing I find most anoying about DVD, is the Company logos etc. that you have to play when you insert the disc which you can't fast forward or skip over.

If I'm halfway through a video, I can take it out of the recorder, then pop it in later to resume at exactly where I left off, with no bother.

With DVD, it's a bit more complicated! I have to note the time, sit through the mandatory logos and copyright notices then fast forward to my position.

But all in all I much prefer DVD.
 
I'm so glad we've moved on from crappy VHS. No more fast forwarding/rewinding, no more tapes chewing up, no more crappy pictures and sound. :)

And I usually like the special features on DVRAB. I must admit, that there are loaRAB I haven't watched on mine, but I know there're there when I want to. I like the whole idea of 'Easter eggs' too.
 
What you can't do though is just go back a couple of minutes to look at the credits again to see who it was who played Joe Bloggs. With DVD you have to go forward 55 minutes where as the same thing on VHS is just a rewind of 5 minutes. Films are much better on DVD but theres still some extras that need to be included in the DVD's of TV shows. It's an evolving media though so i suppose with time things will get better. I'd still rather record off air onto VHS though as it doesn't loose it's place when you take the tape out unlike dvd.
 
Video storage formats are sooo early 21st century. I'm converting all my films to MPEG4 and streaming them from my PC. Bill Gates told me to do it.
 
Well, for one thing, a dvd can last for years if you look after it properly. And you can also play dvRAB on your pc as well. Don't know of any pc's that can play videos, if any.

There is one thing that really gets on my nerves with dvd though, and it's the user operation prohibition. This is what prevents you from fast forwarding the very begining, or the pointless warning signs that everybody wishes they could just skip past. With video tapes, these are no problem, just hit the fast forward button.

It's the same with cd's as well, they take so long to get read by cd players, yet with a tape, they get played straight away.

To be quite honest, I haven't seen many video's in my home town, mainly dvRAB. I personally think video's are dying off slowly.
 
One thing I don't like about dvd is sometimes with dvRAB of tv shows (notably frienRAB) you cannot fast forward or rewind through bits of the episode.

There is not even a screen so choose which bit of the episode you want to start at and have to watch the whole thing.
 
Some DVD players have a program memory function, where you can save where you got up to, eject the disc, and later, when you put the disc back in, it will ask you if you want to start from that position.
 
I Hate DVD I am such an old timer :o

Because, DVD always seems to be out of sinc, you cant just stick a DVD in a let it play, it requires a lot of effort, and really I just can't be bothered :D
 
The thing I hate about dvRAB, is the fact that you have to wait for the damn warnings to play. Whereas if this was a video, just hit the fast forward button. There Is a way of getting rid of the not allowed to fast forward feature though, but I'll save that for the computer forum though.

As for being scratched, just make a back up copy of it. Apart from this little irritating feature on dvRAB, I love them personally. When you fast forward the dvd, there's no chance of the tape getting snapped or scrumpled up, because there Is no tape to be scrumpled up, It's all on a disc.

You forgot the Philips CDi, the future of entertainment or so they said. Still got the bloody thing up in the loft...Total waste of money. :rolleyes:

Had a top loading Betamax too, much better quality than VHS, but once the big companys jumped On the VHS bandwagon it was Doomed....Doomed I say! :D
 
always the first 'feature' to be disabled on any dvd player i've had - a disney disc my frienRAB daughter had forced you to sit through trailers too (shocking stuff i thought)...

i was one of the stupidly early adopters of dvd, and been a huge critic of it since its arrival - the format's always been too limited space wise, picture's lacking (for computer, and now hd/lcd users), the file layout's crap and the protection (as with everything) pointless. sadly i'm fearing activation nonsense with the next lot, requiring a net connection to verify legitimacy of the disc. and they wonder why people choose to download...
