Does any GPS work well in the woods for hiking?

I am somewhat new to the GPS handheld world. I am looking at the Garmin eTrex Venture HC. From reports I have read, it sounds like a good GPS for hiking and geocaching. I would like to see other opinions.

most GPS only take AA batteries, so you don't really need to charge them, but during a camping trip, many people now have these solar chargers that charge your batteries for you, just carry two sets of batteries and your all good.
a GPS can be a good addition to a hiking bag, but nothing can really replace the durability and dependability of a solid compass.

GPS are a tool and as Stormgal said nice too have but when they fail nothing beats having the map and compass. I don't know of a rechargeable model I have the Garmin 60cx and it will last me a couple of days on it's batteries always on. I bring extra batteries. As far as accuracy goes it has always been spot on for me even in heavy timber and canyons. The way-point feature and maps it contains are very helpful along with the paper map in keeping me on trail specially when snow or weather conditions hide where I need to be. In search and rescue being spot on has saved hours in getting help to the right location. So if you don't have one get one you will be quite pleased.
