Does airport security do something to electronics batteries?

When I took a short flight to CA, I had both a cell phone and a digital camera in my carry-on luggage. Both were fully charged, but when I got there not only was the power drained in both items, but when I charged them they only lasted for a couple of minutes before they went dead again. They did this a couple of times, but when I returned home and charged them they've been fine since then.

Was this something about airport security or something else? I was staying at a private residence that was in a bubble of non-cell-usage, but otherwise seemed like a nice, modern house.

How can I avoid this happening again on my upcoming trip? They need to be in carry-on luggage, but I'd like to be able to take pictures and call for help when I get there! Thanks.
