For lake fishing, does the use of a fish finder and downrigger make much of a difference in catching fish, or is fishing without them just as productive?

Yes a fishfinder will always help by locating structure and fish. Downriggers depend on what types of lakes you fish and for what species. Big lakes where you'd fish for lake trout they are essential. Where trolling is allowed for walleye, pike, and muskie downriggers can be a big help but aren't necessary. For the more shallow running fish a lot of people use planer boards or outriggers to troll several rigs at one time.

I have never used down rigger I usually fish smaller water. But a sonar device helps to locate structure and fish need structure for cover most of the time, weeds, rocks, trees, sunken rivers, all types of under water stuff, also the better device has GPS tracking to mark the hot spots you find on that favorite lake as well as gives you a water temperature which is critical for spawning temps and suspended fish.
So sonar for sure helps find fish.
