does a civilization need an economy?

That's like asking, Do people need food?

Just imagine, without trade, you would have to produce EVERYTHING you want to consume, witch would probably mean you wouldn't have a computer, a car, nice clothes, a TV, books and maaaany other things, we would all be struggling just to survive, so no civilisation.
Money is just a way to facilitate trade.

yes. You have got to have some sort of trade because one family cannot raise their own food and spin their own thread and make their own clothes and mine their own metal to make their own pots and pans and shoe their own horses plus make their own horseshoes and nails while growing and cutting their own timber and building their own home. The whole while making the wife pregnant and bearing children and taking care of them. Trade eases the burden of having to do every single thing yourself.

uh yes... civilization automatically wanders to a method of barter or "money". Its just the way the world runs and always has since the beginning of time
