Dodgey Terminator Disc

lauuuuren.

Today I decided to watch "The Terminator" on dvd which I bought when it was first released (it's the normal two disc edition).

I haven't watched it for about a year and a half now. When I took the disc out I was shocked at what I saw. The disc had developed some sort of strange condensation which made it unplayable, the surface of the disc was also quite sticky.

I cleaned it with a CD cleaner and the film seems to work OK, however after this the disc looks a little worse for wear. The second disc is exactly the same but I haven't cleaned that one up.

I remember reading about this sort of thing in DVD REVIEW magazine and remember there was an address that you could send the discs to for a replacement. I was wondering if anyone could remember the address to send the discs?

Thanks in advance,
Martin

I seem to remember there was only a problem like this with certain batches of "The Terminator" and "The Silence of the Lambs" discs.

There was an address to send discs like this for a replacement, but I can't seem to find it.

Ah the infamous "DVD rot". There was a freephone number: 0800 3898384. It basically said to post only the faulty disk to a freepost address, (FREEPOST, DVD RETURN.) along with a return address. I used it successfully - however I just checked and couldn't connect.

I did find a contact address from a 2002 news.net post:
MGM Home Entertainment Europe
5 Kew Road
Richmond
Surrey
TW9 2PR
Fax: 020-8939-9314

The email on their website is [email protected]

Hopefully this will allow you to contact them.

Personally I feel despite the fact that you bought the DVD some time ago you are within your rights to go back to the shop and ask for a replacement - they shouldn't lose out since MGM will, eventually, pick up the cost.

The shop probably won't give you a refund, as you only have a 16 day statuatory position - mind you, some larger chain stores are often quite forgiving when it comes to this policy.

Amazingly, some distributors still claim that 'DVD Rot' doesn't exist! Suppose it'd make them liable if they did...
