I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 46RE transmission. Do you guys know what the specifics are that usually result into early death of these units so frequently? Thank You.

yes i own one of them, the guy that i bought it from neglected to change the tranny fluid when he should and that killed the tranny for me,when i got it was just about too late to save it,good maintenance will make those last longer, its just that people think that dodges are so reliable that you never have to change the fluid in them, and that's what kills them,im going to have to change mine out, because its slipping real bad now,if you do good maintenance they will go up to 150 thousand that i know of without giving to many problems, good luck.

check the recall on it.also motor trend might have some archived notes you can muttle over.

Snow plows, gun nig it in reverse. Trans fluid changes or lack of. You must MUST change your trans fluid. ALSO mis diagnosis a bad sensor can cause a trans to not shift or work properly. You or the tech don't figure that out Just say the trans is bad. When the trans is fine. It's like replacing your engine for a bad spark plug. When your engine doesn't start, do you say "I need an engine" I overhaul transmissions and I've overhauled all kinds. But yet I've never done my own because I know to change my fluid and to put the right fluid back in it. The only specific I could tell you is it's you abusing it or bad trans rebuilds. What happend to yours?
