Dodge Ram Transmission and driveshaft fell out while driving?

i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.2 v8 with what used to be a 4 speed auto transmission. while driving down the highway at 70 mph the tranie went and cracked the case in half out and the drive shaft fell out and i ran over it with my rear right tire! what could have caused this catastrophic failure? The truck only has 103,000 miles and now the transmission is so trashed i dont even know if it can be repaired
