Dodge Ram 1500 4.7L loses power and dies if fuel level reaches 1/8th tank?

The truck has a 26G tank and when the fuel level reaches approx 1/8th the truck will lose power and die. If in gear it will not accelerate at all and if in neutral will rev some but not like normal. My theory is a faulty fuel pump. I noticed if I add some gas it will start up and run rough but soon smooths out. It throws the code with the following description: "random multiple cylinder misfire".
2003 model year btw.
I appreciate the comments regarding the operation of the fuel pump, I already understand how they work. More precisely I know not running the tank that low could resolve my issue (at least temporarily), however, I am not a fan of driving around in traffic with parts that could fail I ignore fixing them. Understanding that never before has the gauge been so grossly inaccurate my question is based upon the information provided would it seem plausible that the fuel pump is faulty and in need of replacement?

Your fuel gauge sending unit has gone bad between 1/8th and empty.
The best fix is to replace the pump and the sending unit as a complete package. Seems you've ran out of gas and got the pump hot more than one time, so dropping the tank and just replacing the sending unit and not the pump wouldn't sense.
