Dodge Durango or Jeep Grand Cherokee?

im buying a used vehicle, decided an SUV will suit my needs, i need to know which the better vehicle is, year of the jeep is 1999, so its the middle body style, 4.7 L.
The Durango is a 1999 also, i think it has the 5.2 L, but im still waiting for a dealer answer.
both are 4X4's, with towing, leather, and both are around 120000 miles, and are 4000$

i prefer the jeep's center shifter and interior, but i like the durango's larger wheel wells, and it seems more rugged

I do some recreational offroad, nothing crazy, i live in northern illinois so i deal with wicked snow and ice, so thats a factor.

NO, dave is correct, the jeep IS the one with the 4.7, yes they have a 4.7 liter powertech in 1999, and i think 2000
 
They are similar vehicles and it sounds like both would suit your needs. From experience I would lean towards the Durango for 2 simple reasons.
#1 Even though the 4.7 is a descent engine the 5.2L and 5.9L are much more reliable and less expensive to repair if necessary. And the Durango will have the more reliable 46RE trans as opposed to the 545RFE in the Jeep
#2 We see alot more wierd electrical problems with the grand Cherokee's (not that Durango's dont have their quirks sometimes).

Speaking from experience when my buddy and I go slight off roading on occasion he had trouble keeping up with my Grand Cherokee (97) in his 98 Durango, they are much bulkier. Also the durango gets a few miles to the gallon less, and a little slower (not much but it is). I say go wiith the jeep if the only thing keeping you on the durango is the Wheel wells.

P.S. Dave you just contradicted yourself, you say the 5.2 and 5.9 are more reliable but still you say Durango which is the car that has the 4.7, jeep never mad a 4.7 L

My apologies then but you aren't looking at getting that model are you? Again this is just my experience I love my jeep and I know my Buddy has had a lot more problems with his 98 durango than me and well durangos are definitely not offroading vehicles.
