Dodge Dakota Transfer case Torque Bind up?

I have a 01 Dodge Dakota v6 5 speed and when I shift into 4 hi on both dry road and loose surfaces the transfer case binds and rear wheels grab and and screech. it doesnt want to move either. It grinds and wont shift out of 4. I have to reverse about 10 feet for it to disenge back to 2 wheel drive. Any Body know what is going on?

You may have already done the damage by engaging it on dry pavement, definitely not good.

A simple lube change may fix it, or your front axle u-joints, the chain inside the T-case may have stretched also.
