Documents To Go file crashes Palm

Hi all.
Have Docs to Go Ver. 6 installed on Tungsten T3.
After I sync a MS Word doc into the Palm, and try to open the Doc to Go file on the Palm, it crashes and I have to reset.

I also have Wordsmith installed. Is it possible there's a conflict between the two apps?

I am at work, but I was sent a program by DataVis Tech Support after multiple crashes cause by D2Go. Apparently, this problem is a lot more prevalent than they let on. With the program (DataVizTech) you can remove the corrupt file and save all your data. I also have detailed instructions on exactly the steps to follow to repair the issue. Sorry you have to wait until I get home, but I leave work at 3pm to go home and will send the instructions. Unfortunately, I had a PC failure and lost the program, but I believe it is downloadable from their web-site, or you can at worst request it from Tech Support at DataViz.

The following is copied and pasted from DV Tech Support, Jason:

?Try the following steps. I know you mentioned that you tried reinstalling the program, however these steps offer a few other things along the way which may resolve your issue. Please follow the steps carefully, and to be safe make sure that all of the documents on your handheld have been synced to your desktop.

Please insert any expansion card that you may own to ensure that these steps work correctly. (If you do not own an expansion card, there is no need to buy and insert one into the handheld, simply follow the steps below exactly as stated)

Please make sure you have around 7 megs free on the handheld, then:

1. Click on the PRC DataVizTech, and save it to your desktop
2. Double click on the PRC, which is now on your desktop. It will go into Palm's Quick Install, and be queued for the next HotSync
3. Hotsync
4. On the handheld, open the application DataVizTech
5 Tap on the "Move Applications to Handheld" Button
6 You will receive a message asking you to confirm you would like to move the applications. Tap "Yes".
7. Choose the third option, uninstall Documents to Go.
8. Tap the upper left hand corner of the screen to bring down a menu
9. Choose Options> Advanced Options
10. Tap the first button, "Delete Preferences"
11. Next, tap the third button, "Delete Temp Database"
This will remove the handheld applications.

Perform a Soft Reset:
Use the reset tip tool (see below), or the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip), to gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.
A soft reset tells your handheld to stop what it's doing and start over again. All records and entries stored in your handheld are retained with a soft reset. After a soft reset, the Welcome screen appears, followed by the General Preferences screen.

On the desktop:
1. Open Documents To Go on the desktop computer. Click on the Tools Menu and select Re-Install Handheld Applications.
2. Click Ok.
3. Close Documents To Go on the desktop computer, put the Palm device in the cradle and synchronize the device. This should correct this issue.

****Please note: If you are using a laptop computer with a docking station (or network synching with a wireless device), please remove the laptop from the dock, plug your sync cable directly into the laptop, and try to reinstall the handheld applications.

Hopefully this will resolve your issue. If you continue to have trouble, hit post reply and I will assist you further.

Regards,
Jason
DataViz Support?

I am no longer using Wordsmith. There are many reasons, conflicts with D2Go is not one of them, and its been a while so I don?t recall the others. Others feel exactly the opposite, so you pay your money and take your choice. I do know that D2Go does cause periodic crashes and problems, but I have survived them all with little hassle (most of the time). Hope this helps. If you cannot locate the DataVizTech program on their web site, just call or email Jaason (per above). It has worked for me several times. The instructions appear far more complicated than they really are in practice. It is not that difficult to do. LOL (lots of luck).

Thanks, drbaer. It was suggested at One Source?s forum to get a "free upgrade" of the buggy version 6 of D2Go. Well, I upgraded (for $30) to Version 8. First syncs caused some syncing problems with a totally unrelated app (ACT! for Palm) but after some playing around everything seem cool and dandy.
No more crashed now.
Couldn't find DataVizTech program on their site, but now I earned the right for tech support. If anything goes wrong I know where to go.
I have one question, though: D2Go can now transfer JPGs and PDFs to the Palm, however, I?d installed other apps which do this task (they came with the Tungsten T3 install disc, if I recall.)
Would there be any conflict with D2Go if I let it do the same task? It?s easier to transfer all the different file types with just one app, and the new D2Go is supposed to do it.

I cannot guarantee either way, but I have several thoughts. First I havent upgraded D2Go, due to the crashes, but will reconsider if I find out that it will relieve that problem. Second, I have learned, if it aint broke dont fix it. If you have a program that works use it. As far as conflicts I have had some that did and some that didnt, the potential for conflicts will always exist with similar programs running, sometimes even with unrelated programs as they may use some of the same parts of the Palm program.

I would suggest deleting the old program, try D2Go and if it works there you are. If there are problems, reinstall the old program. That way you can have the best of both. Try it on D2Go alone first, if it doesnt work right reinstall the one that did, but as above there would then be the potential for conflict, but no choice except to try.

Lol (lots of luck)

OK, so far so good. Although I had installed the jpg and pdf file viewers that came with my TT3, there are no conflicts with D2Go viewing these files and transferring then to the PDA.

One comment , though. It takes a looong time for D2Go to prep a doc file for sync. I wonder why.

My experience (not any particular intelligence) is that D2Go is a virtually humongous sized program and not very efficient. You are right, it takes too long to prep a doc.for download, it also takes longer than I think it should for hotsync, and then, of course, are all the crash problems. I have found (SO FAR) that the update is a definite improvement in most of these areas. However, I feel, it still is an obese, inefficient, program. On their side, is that the program does an awful lot with High End PC programs (Word, Excell, Power Point, Adobe PDF, etc), on a much smaller sized computer, so they have to compromise somewhere. It seems as though that they are learning from their experience and problems. It aint perfect, but it is headed in the right direction at least. Time will tell.
