Docs To Go on the T3

My wife has a 150-page document of recipies in MS Word 2000 format. Each recipe has two columns in it with the list of ingredients. When we transfer the document into DocsToGo, it transfers flawlessly, but the columns don't line up. All of the paragraphs and spacing is perfect, but we can't find a way to keep the "column" formatting lined up. Anybody have any ideas?

Docs@Go is great - but most people forget about the BEAUTY of Excel and Docs2Go's "Sheet2Go."

Try formatting the file as .csv, opening in Excel, and syncing THAT SPREADSHEET in to Sheet to Go. You've got columns now!

Furthermore, I love MobileDB4 (Handmark). The same .csv can then be imported to the desktop manager for MobileDb, and she can have a DATABASE of it too (more friendly to longer text fields), and the ability to SEARCH for anything she wants in the database.

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't been able to figure out how to format the file as a .csv file. How does one do this? Thanks again.
Ron

CSV is the file extension for comma-delimited text files. To get this format, you need to click File-->Save As and then click the file select comma-delimitted text from the file type combo box.

Also, if you plan importing data into a database, you might consider entering your database field names in the first row of each column.

I know Microsoft Access has a utility for importing tables. It is capable of importing normal Excel worksheets in addition to comma-delimitted files. Once the data is imported into Access, you can use your Palm database program to transfer the data to your Palm. Some of the common database programs include SmartList To Go, HanDbase, or MobileDB4.

I appreciate all of the suggestions. I really don't want to use this data in any other format that the original. I called Dataviz in desperation, and they said that their product won't do what I want and that they know of no product that will (sigh). Well, we'll see what tomorrow brings. Thanks to all who answered.

Are you syncing it to DocsToGo as a SheetToGo file, or a native Excel file? If you sync it as a native Excel file, you shouldn't have any problems with the file looking any different than it does on the PC.

Ryber and Dwinget both have got good points (again). Also, if you have Mobile DB, you actually DO NOT have to bring it into Access. It will IMPORT a CSV file and turn it into a Mobile DB on the spot, and you can move the columns around if "names" aren't on the left (1st).

I learned that only because I'm a complete BOOB when it comes to Access -- can't figure that thing out AT ALL. Think I'll launch something from Cape Kennedy before I ever get a database looking good in it . . . I need to find a tutorial!!

Anyway, back on focus: NATIVE excel, and for laughs try the CSV thing and see how you like it -

OK, I'll have to show my ignorance to all of you trying to help me.......I can not seem to save my document with a .cvs extention. Also, I don't know how to import it into "sheets to go". Is that a part of the Docs to Go program or another piece of software altogether? I have been able to import .xls spreadsheets into the Docs to Go program just like adding any other document to it, but not the document with the columns. Sorry for the stupid questions.

No stupid questions, just a bit more information might be required.

SheetToGo is part of Docs To Go--it is just the spreadsheet component.

Looking at your original post, it seems like your recipes are not in a table format (In MS Word, Table->Insert...->Table). It seems like your recipes are just in ordinary text columns. Unfortunately, this is not a good formatting choice. Columns in Word should only be used when the text can flow automatically from one column to the next.

For example, in your Word document, choose Edit->Select All and then change the font size to two points bigger. If everything is now screwed up, your columns aren't working right, and thus it is screwed up in WordToGo as well. (Press Ctrl-Z to undo your change.)

Your best bet would probably be to manually reformat the data into one column.

The only way I see that you could use SheetToGo would be to copy and paste your whole document into Excel, format it there how you like, and then save it as an Excel file, and then import it into Docs To Go as you already know how.

Good luck, hope this helps!
