Believe it or not, the answer has been around for a long time, but nobody listens to the astronomers. Its cyclic variation in solar output. Right now, the sun has zero sunspots so this winter will be a cold one. You heard it here first:

You're on the right track...now go step further and look up the "Milankovitch Cycle". Solar output is a component of this cycle...which has been found to run in a 100,000 year cycle.

Another thing to consider is the earth's magnetic field. The magnetic field blocks a large portion of the incoming solar radiation. During a magnetic reversal the field is much reduced, and a far greater amount of solar radiation gets through. At present, our magnetic fields are weakening in a manner that would seem to indicate that a magnetic reversal is imminent.
