If God listens and hears all your thoughts...well, if you were God wouldn't you be a bit upset with someone constantly praying that they will live another day, not die in a crash, be saved, be looked after.... If you trust God to be on top of things and taking care of you don't you think that is good enough? Don't you think God would take offense at prayers saying please don't kill me today let me live another day... and on and on

God will only be pleased with me, because of Christ and what He did for me. I am very certain that the only thing that He will look at when I face Him will be that "I am saved, by the grace and mercy of Christ"

I am saved throught the blood of Jesus Christ. He is my advocate before the father. Besides, you're giving human attributes to God. God is all knowing. He knows everything we've done, everything we've said, every hair on our head. Yet, if we believe that his son died for our sins & repent of our sins, then he is just to forgive us without any strings attached. I don't expect God to answer all of my prayers because a No (or unanswered prayer) is still an answer. It's not about what WE want, it is about the big picture. God doesn't kill people. Death, pain & suffering are allowed, but not done by the works of God. Death, pain & suffering are the price humanity pays for sin. I don't even pretent to know what the big picture is when it comes to God. I pray. If it's something that God sees fit to grant me, fine. If not, fine. I don't whine. I don't use prayer as a personal "want" thing. I don't pray selfishly as if I were asking a genie for 3 wishes. And, I know that if I'm not living a Godly life, that God is less likely to answer what I'm asking. People often think God is there ONLY when they need them & don't live for HIM on a daily basis.
Romans 8:28
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God"

Thats why we pray "let your will be done" I ask Jesus for his protection every day, cause satan is always ready to throw all sorts of attacs on our lives. But at the end of the day, Only God has the power over life and death, and if it is his will that I should dei in a crash. then so be it! As for being saved, I was saved 16 July 1998 when I invited Jesus Christ into my life to be my Lord and savior, and by the mercyful blood of Jesus, i am now adopted into his family as a child of God. But we all fall sometimes in this sinfull world, We do things that gives satan rite in our lives, therfore we have to repent every day, and wach the seed that we sow.

i do not whine when i pray just thank the Lord for all he has given me that day.

Prayer for me has consisted of gratitude, repentance, asking for other people's benefit and asking to help make me a better person. I haven't generally prayed as a way of asking for myself because clearly God would know what was for the best and it would be silly.

No. Whining is not prayer. Complaining is not prayer. These behaviors are not holy.

God's word specifically tells us to cast all our cares upon Him. God tells us to pray and tell him the desires of our hearts. Sure he already knows but he wants to hear it from us and tells us so! Kinda like me with my kids. I mean, I am not all knowing like God but kids are fairly easy to read and most of the time I know what they are going to ask before they ask it but I don't just give them an answer before they speak up.

Jesus set an example for prayer in the garden on the eve of his death when the things of this world were overwhelming to him and he cried out to God. Look what he was facing, a torturous death. He asked, or what you are calling "whined", that if there were any other way to please let it happen differently but also humbly knew that our sovereign God knew best when he acknowledged "but not my will but yours be done". I am certain God granted Jesus peace because of his prayer, just look at Jesus response when they came to take him away.

Do you assume all Christians pray for the things you mention? Do you assume prayer is all about me, me, me and gimme, gimme, gimme? That is not what prayer is about. Prayer is the way we keep in touch God. I know that when I cast my cares upon Jesus through prayer with a heart humble to accept that his plan is better than mine, God is okay with that! God has big shoulders and can handle it all!

Here's the thing. God tells us to pray. Even though He already knows what we're going to pray, He still wants us to utter the words. It is us showing that we are wanting to be in communion with Him.

Truth be told, yes, we can be selfish when we pray. Thankfully, God doesn't always answer our prayers the way that we want. He knows what is best for us. After time and growth and understanding, we learn to pray that God's will be done in any given circumstance.

God knows that we're going to ask for silly things. Duh, He created us. But its all part of the growing-in-faith process.

Heh heh.
" Dear Gawd, please make Billy notice me. I like totally like him, like totally. I don't care about world poverty and war, just make Billy notice me, oh and make me look pretty to him"

You are describing a genie not God. Prayer is for praise, thankfulness and repentance. If one has faith in God you would not have to pray for the things you just mentioned.

67:0 In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
67:1 Most exalted is the One in whose hands is all kingship, and He is Omnipotent.
67:2 The One who created death and life for the purpose of distinguishing those among you who would do better.* He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.
