black liberation platform?
Fairtax: thanks for the quote from Lincoln's speech. I guess they would vote for him after all if he said all that. (I mean the part about blacks, not the part about paying for the govt.)

Abraham Lincoln did NOT want to free the slaves. He flat did not care. the northern abolitionist wanted the slavery ended., yet the slave trade was conducted up north.

You people need to find out the real events of history, not what was taught in school. Your history books were wrong and actual notes and speeches prove it!

Edited to ajr:
If you would read what went on during his presidency, you would see that he only wrote that to appease the northern groups. He didn't care to do anything but keepthe south from seceding. He actually decided to send the freed slaves to work on the panama canal to get them out of the country so they wouldn't rise up against the southern owners and they wouldn't go north and reek havoc on the industrial work force.

I don't think Abe would've been running that platform if he could've seen into the future and seen the welfare state that eventually manifested.

Check your history. Lincoln did not care if blacks were liberated or not. He just did not want to loose the federal revenue of the South. ( 75% of gov't revenue came from an export tax on southern goods back then)

When asked, "Why not let the South go in peace?"
Lincoln replied: "I can't let them go. Who would pay for the government?"

Abraham Lincoln said the following on September 18, 1858 in a speech in Charleston, Illinois:
"I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races [applause]: that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will for ever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I, as much as any other man, am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." -- Reply by Abraham Lincoln to Stephen A. Douglas in the first joint debate, Ottowa, IL; 21 Aug 1858

to the guy below, yes read the Emancipation Proclamation. It only frees blacks in areas Lincoln had no jurisdiction in. It freed no one in Kentucky or anywhere else not in "rebellion".

TO all those that say Lincoln didn't care
Ha, ha, ha.

Please: read Emancipation Proclamation before talking, if he didn't care, he wouldn't of risked the union on it.

Dear God, learn some history before you say such things! Lincoln himself had owned slaves, he didn't care about black liberation. He just cared about making the federal government more powerful and making sure any state that wanted to leave the union would get beaten up for not wanting to be told what to do by outsiders.

Anyway, to answer the question, no, if Lincoln somehow ran on such a ticket today, the South probably wouldn't vote for him.

The south would vote Republican if Mike Huckabee played the banjo on the podium during the debate.
